Avant Garde is an exercise in pure sculpture from Darren Ambrose at D&J Ambrose. Hair is shaped into weightless orbs, swept-up rolls and windswept halos, while colour is stripped back to porcelain and ink – with prismatic light doing the drama – so that form and texture lead the eye. Bold, theatrical and unmistakably editorial, a signature of Ambrose’s craft.

It shows the artistic edge of 2006. As wearable salon trends ran one way, the era’s session and competition work pushed the other – architectural, sculpted hair, extreme shapes and gallery-style presentation built to showcase pure technique. Darren Ambrose’s Avant Garde belongs to that world, where hair becomes sculpture.
